Thanks to a joint-partnership with Hawk’s Agro and JGL, who worked quietly alongside of the Conference Prize Committee, The South Saskatchewan First Responder Conference introduced its first-ever “Above and Beyond Award.” Created as a heartfelt way to recognize the extraordinary people who serve their communities with compassion, courage, and unwavering commitment, the award included a $500 cash prize for the recipient to direct to the local emergency response agency of their choice, whether a Medical First Responder group, Fire Department, or EMS base.

Throughout the conference weekend, nominations were accepted by the Conference Prize Committee, who collaborated closely with the Hawk’s Agro and JGL team to carefully review each submission and jointly select a recipient whose service truly stood out. In choosing the winner, the committee placed special emphasis on the qualities that lie at the heart of first response work: commitment, dedication, teamwork, mentorship, and experience.

The new award reflects the deep appreciation communities feel for the first responders who so often step forward in moments of uncertainty and need. In rural communities especially, these individuals are neighbours, friends, and trusted helping hands. By establishing the Above and Beyond Award, Hawk’s Agro and JGL are not only recognizing outstanding service but also giving back to the local emergency teams that families rely on every day.

After careful review, the committee was pleased to select Kevin P., a resolute first responder with the Willow Bunch First Responders. Kevin received a total of seven nominations, each one speaking to his commitment to checking in on fellow team members, his dedication to sharing knowledge and skills, and the leadership his community has come to admire and depend on. As one nomination beautifully expressed, Kevin “cares more than anyone I know and is always learning and trying to better himself.”

Recently, Kevin was presented with a leather-bound certificate recognizing him as the first recipient of the Hawk’s Agro/JGL- Above and Beyond Award by Prize Committee Chairperson Kathy Christmann. He also gratefully accepted the combined $500 in-kind donation on behalf of the Willow Bunch First Responders, who plan to use the funds to purchase much-needed shelving and equipment.

During the difficult selection process, the committee was also deeply moved by the nomination for an individual “who embodies selflessness and dedication while balancing a job, single parenthood, and consistent service as a first responder.”  This nomination spoke of the tremendous ways this individual supports families in need and advocates for others with compassion and care. For this reason, the committee chose to also recognize Wanita P. of the McLean First Responders with a certificate honouring her as a “Leader in Compassion.”

Wanita was recently presented with her Leader in Compassion certificate in Moose Jaw by Kathy Christmann, and SSFRCC member, Mike Slater.
